Why LPs Are Quietly Re-Evaluating GPs Based on AI Readiness — Not Just Track Record

June 19, 2026

For decades, Limited Partners (LPs) primarily evaluated General Partners (GPs) based on historical returns, deal experience, and network strength. While track record still matters, a new factor is increasingly influencing allocation decisions: AI readiness.

As private markets become more data-driven and operationally complex, LPs are beginning to assess whether GPs have the technological infrastructure and analytical capabilities needed to compete in a rapidly evolving investment landscape.

The shift is subtle but important. Investors are no longer asking only, “What were your past returns?” They are also asking, “How scalable, intelligent, and future-ready is your operating model?”

A strong example can be seen in how leading firms like Blackstone and KKR continue investing heavily in data analytics, AI tools, and technology infrastructure to enhance sourcing, diligence, portfolio management, and investor reporting.

What LPs Are Increasingly Evaluating

  • Data Infrastructure: Whether firms have integrated systems for investment analysis, reporting, and portfolio monitoring.
  • AI-Driven Decision-Making: How firms use analytics and AI to improve sourcing, diligence, and operational insights.
  • Operational Scalability: Whether the GP can scale efficiently without significantly increasing operational complexity or costs.
  • Portfolio Value Creation: The ability to help portfolio companies adopt AI and improve operational performance.
  • Reporting & Transparency: The quality, speed, and consistency of data shared with LPs.

This evolution does not mean traditional investment judgment is becoming irrelevant. Instead, LPs increasingly view AI readiness as a signal of adaptability, operational sophistication, and long-term competitiveness.

In the coming years, the most attractive GPs may not simply be those with the strongest historical performance, but those best positioned to operate intelligently in an AI-driven private markets environment.
