The New PE Technology Metric: Time-to-Decision --

Oct 16, 2026

Private equity firms have traditionally measured technology through familiar metrics: cost, adoption, efficiency, uptime, and return on investment.
But there is another metric that may matter more to the investment team:
How long does it take to move from information to a decision?
A deal team can have a sophisticated CRM, a powerful data platform, and dozens of specialized tools—and still spend days assembling information before an investment decision can be made.
Where Time Gets Lost
Finding the information.

Data is often spread across emails, spreadsheets, data rooms, research platforms, and internal systems. The information exists, but finding it takes time.
Making the information usable.
Raw financials, customer data, market research, and diligence materials need to be cleaned, structured, compared, and interpreted before they become decision-ready.
Connecting the dots.
The real bottleneck is often not analysis itself, but connecting information across different sources to understand what it actually means for the investment.
Getting everyone aligned.
When teams work from different versions of data or analysis, additional meetings and review cycles are required before conviction can form.
The Technology Question Is Changing
The goal of PE technology should not simply be to make individual tasks faster.
It should reduce the distance between a question and a confident answer.
That means measuring technology by how quickly an investment team can move from:
Data → Insight → Discussion → Decision
Time-to-decision could become one of the most revealing measures of whether a firm's technology stack is actually improving the investment process.
Because in private equity, saving an hour is useful. Making the right decision two days earlier can be far more valuable.
